Erling Haaland's Place Among Premier League's Greatest Goal Scorers: Where Does He Stand on the All-Time List?

web editor

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Erling Haaland secured his second consecutive Premier League Golden Boot with a stunning brace in City's crucial 2-0 victory over Tottenham in the penultimate match of the season. Haaland's stellar performance brought his tally to an impressive 27 goals in the 2023/24 campaign, solidifying his status as one of the top strikers in the world.

While he was not on the scoresheet in the final game of the season where City beat West Ham 3-1 to lift their fourth consecutive title, he has still made a hot start to life in England.

Haaland's haul of 36 goals in 2022/23 broke the Premier League's single-season record. He was also the fastest player to 50 goals in the competition's history, taking just 48 games.

His treble against Ipswich Town on August 24 brought up a seventh hat-trick within two seasons in England's top flight, already over halfway towards the record of 12 set by City predecessor Sergio Aguero and level with Wayne Rooney.

It begs the question, is any record safe with Haaland around? The Sporting News looks at the all-time standings for the most goals in the Premier League and just how many more Haaland would need to break it.

Premier League top all-time goal scorers list

The record for the most Premier League goals belongs to Alan Shearer, who scored 260 in the competition for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.

The former England striker actually scored 283 top-flight goals in total: he scored 23 times for Southampton in the old First Division, before the Premier League began in 1992.

The list below is updated as of Saturday, August 24, 2024 (active players in bold).

Haaland is on 67 goals in the Premier League overall, putting him joint 76 on the all-time list with Gylfi Sigurdsson and Michail Antonio.

The only current team-mate of Haaland's ahead of him is Kevin De Bruyne on 69 and he is City's fourth-highest Premier League goalscorer of all time behind Aguero (184) and Raheem Sterling (91).

In terms of the top man in league history, Haaland has a considerable amount of ground to make up on Shearer. Between two blistering spells at Blackburn and Newcastle, Shearer's ability to finish almost any type of chance is something most could never even dream of being matched.

Haaland is contracted to City until June 2027. If he keeps scoring at his current rate and averages over 30 goals per season for the entirety of this period he would crash the top 20 but remain well short of Shearer's total of 260.

However, Pep Guardiola's attacking talisman is only 24. If he decides to commit the bulk of his career to City and stays in Manchester for a decade, following in the footsteps of the likes of Aguero, De Bruyne and David Silva, then Shearer's record could be under threat.

That is the challenge for any player wanting to unseat the former England captain. Even if you score at an incredible rate, it requires a feat of remarkable longevity. Harry Kane is second on the all-time list and might have got close before Bayern Munich came calling.
