Arne Slot Targets Liverpool Star for Increasing Goal Tally

Szoboszlai has been a consistent presence in Slot's lineup this season, completing the full 90 minutes in all four of the Reds' Premier League matches.

Tuesday’s Champions League clash with AC Milan could see the Hungarian rack up his 50th appearance for Liverpool since moving from RB Leipzig in 2023 and Slot is largely impressed with what he has seen so far.

‘I think all of the squad players I have, they have an important role,’ the Liverpool boss said when asked about Szoboszlai.

‘He’s played all four of them now and every players feels more important when he plays than when he’s not playing, but every squad member has his role and during a season all of them will play a lot, because we play a lot of games.

‘But he’s been important for us, especially until now in our work when we don’t have the ball. He’s been outstanding in his pressing game.’

However, the Dutchman made it clear that the 23-year-old is not the finished article and must work to improve upon his goalscoring record.

Szoboszlai racked up six goals and eight assists in the Bundesliga prior to his move to Anfield from RB Leipzig but is yet to score so far this season and had just five goal involvements in his first season at the club.

‘I think something that we have to work on with him is that he’s also even more involved in scoring goals and creating chances for us,’ Slot admitted.

‘Last season he scored three [in the league] if I remember correctly and for an attacking midfielder at Liverpool his numbers need to go up.

‘But I’m really happy with the way he’s done until now and I’m 100 percent sure that if he plays in a team with so much quality around him, with the quality he has he will in the end score more goals for us as well.’

Having slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the weekend, Slot is determined to see his side bounce back in Italy.

‘It was a totally different game and that’s also for tomorrow I expect a completely different game against Milan with the type of players they have and the playing style that manager has compared to Nottingham Forest,’ he said.

‘But we should be disappointed if you lose a home game against Nottingham Forest and you work for Liverpool. Four games, nine points, it’s a good start, but it’s not a great start because then we would’ve had 12.’
